Film of the Week

In celebration of last weekend's Easter, the movie that I have chosen for this week's Film of the Week is Easter Parade, starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. I love this movie and watch it every Easter! It was great to see a lot of fellow pin up girls and Old Hollywood lovers also watching Easter Parade on Sunday.

This movie is about a dance duo, Nadine and Hewes, played by Ann Miller and Fred Astaire, who break up when Nadine decides to become a solo act. Don Hewes (Astaire) gets upset about this as he believed that Nadine and himself also had a romantic relationship. After Don leaves Nadine when she tells him she has a contract all for herself he heads to a bar and begins to get drunk. During this time Don tells the bartender and his friend Jonathon (played by Peter Lawford) that he could dance with anyone. Don then notices Judy Garland's character, Hannah Brown, performing onstage and decides that she's his new dancing partner.

At first Hannah is a terrible dance partner with Don trying to have her imitate Nadine, but things eventually fall into place and they begin to find success together. I'll leave the plot there as I don't want to spoil anything!

This is one of my favourite musicals, I love every song and dance that Judy, Fred and Ann perform. I could take or leave Peter Lawford though. This is a wonderful movie!

I was able to get this movie on DVD from JB Hi Fi.

Fashion Bit
Ann Miller's Wardrobe really stole the show in Easter Parade. I loved how she had a different dog to match each of her outfits! Her is an image of her in one of the dancing scenes, this dress is a begins as white at the top and fades into a beautiful pink and then red at the bottom. It's interesting to note that when Ann performs her solo dance in this dress she is wearing heels, but when she dances with Astaire in the same dress Ann is then wearing ballet flats.

Favourite Quote
I guess when they were handing out the wishes, I wished for him.

Food Bit
At the end of the film Hannah gives Don a huge candy Easter egg! This is a cute part of the movie because Hannah tries to win Don back after their fight by giving him all the presents that a man would normally give a woman - a new hat, a pet bunny rabbit and candy (the Easter egg).

What to Watch Next
For some more Fred Astaire fun it would be a good idea to watch Top Hat. This movie can be found on iTunes.

I hope you enjoyed this week's choice for Film of the Week!

See you soon,

Miss Rebecca Rockford

New Beauty Products

Hello! Over the past few weeks I have been having fun buying and trying new beauty and hair products. Most of these are hair-related as I'm always on the lookout for new ways to curl my hair. Here are the items I purchased and my thoughts on each of them... Sculpture Pin-Curl Tool I bought this Sculpture Pin Curl Tool from That Shop at Robina but I believe you can also buy them online at Atomic Cherry. This is created by Lauren Rennells, the author of Vintage Hairstyling and Retro Makeup. You use the little blue tool to help wrap your hair for pin curls. Inside the box there was also an instruction booklet with different styles, rolling and brush-out techniques and a gorgeous poster of different vintage hairstyles. It is such an interesting tool and quite easy to use. I used it on a wet set and found that the pin curls were a lot smaller than when I roll them just using my hands. The only down-side to this tool is that when they dried and I did the brush-out, the hai

Film of the Week

This week's choice is not a classic movie, but another one of my favourite films about life in the 1940s and 50s. A League of Their Own is my choice for this week and has everything you could want; Madonna, Tom Hanks and the fabulous aesthetic and interesting culture that was 1940's America. A League of Their Own (1992) This movie is about the American Women's Baseball League that was created during WW2 due to the shortage of male ball-players that were called to fight in the war. I'm not normally a fan a sports movies, but I really like how this films captures the culture of the 1940's during wartime. The story follows two sisters (played by Geena Davis and Lori Petty) who join the league and are on the same baseball team - The Rockford Peaches (my namesake!).  While the film mainly focuses on the rise of the baseball league, there are some other aspects of the story that are shown such as the relationships between the girls and their coach (played b
