New Beauty Products

Hello! Over the past few weeks I have been having fun buying and trying new beauty and hair products. Most of these are hair-related as I'm always on the lookout for new ways to curl my hair. Here are the items I purchased and my thoughts on each of them... Sculpture Pin-Curl Tool I bought this Sculpture Pin Curl Tool from That Shop at Robina but I believe you can also buy them online at Atomic Cherry. This is created by Lauren Rennells, the author of Vintage Hairstyling and Retro Makeup. You use the little blue tool to help wrap your hair for pin curls. Inside the box there was also an instruction booklet with different styles, rolling and brush-out techniques and a gorgeous poster of different vintage hairstyles. It is such an interesting tool and quite easy to use. I used it on a wet set and found that the pin curls were a lot smaller than when I roll them just using my hands. The only down-side to this tool is that when they dried and I did the brush-out, the hai

Film of the Week

This week's choice is not a classic movie, but another one of my favourite films about life in the 1940s and 50s. A League of Their Own is my choice for this week and has everything you could want; Madonna, Tom Hanks and the fabulous aesthetic and interesting culture that was 1940's America. A League of Their Own (1992) This movie is about the American Women's Baseball League that was created during WW2 due to the shortage of male ball-players that were called to fight in the war. I'm not normally a fan a sports movies, but I really like how this films captures the culture of the 1940's during wartime. The story follows two sisters (played by Geena Davis and Lori Petty) who join the league and are on the same baseball team - The Rockford Peaches (my namesake!).  While the film mainly focuses on the rise of the baseball league, there are some other aspects of the story that are shown such as the relationships between the girls and their coach (played b

Top Pinup and Old Hollywood Podcasts

I love podcasts! My drive to work is around an hour to and from each day, and podcasts are my favourite way to make the long journey seem shorter. So I've decided to put a list of my favourite pinup and Old Hollywood themed podcasts. I listen to my podcasts from iTunes. Please let me know if there are any others that I can add to this list! 1. You Must Remember This This is my favourite podcast to listen to. It is all about 'the secrets, and or, forgotten histories of Hollywood's first century'. The current series that is running and is about to finish is called 'Dead Blondes'. This series has been about famous blonde actresses of Old Hollywood, who died quite young. It has been a wonderful series. I would also recommend a listen to the Joan Crawford series that Karina Longworth, the podcast's creator, did last year especially if you're a fan of the show Feud. 2. This Retro Life I have only been listening to this podcast for a few weeks,

Film of the Week

In celebration of last weekend's Easter, the movie that I have chosen for this week's Film of the Week is Easter Parade , starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. I love this movie and watch it every Easter! It was great to see a lot of fellow pin up girls and Old Hollywood lovers also watching Easter Parade on Sunday. Easter Parade (1948) (Photo from Dr Macro ) This movie is about a dance duo, Nadine and Hewes, played by Ann Miller and Fred Astaire, who break up when Nadine decides to become a solo act. Don Hewes (Astaire) gets upset about this as he believed that Nadine and himself also had a romantic relationship. After Don leaves Nadine when she tells him she has a contract all for herself he heads to a bar and begins to get drunk. During this time Don tells the bartender and his friend Jonathon (played by Peter Lawford) that he could dance with anyone. Don then notices Judy Garland's character, Hannah Brown, performing onstage and decides that she's

Book Haul

I spent the last few days of my holidays doing a lot of shopping! I came across some great pinup style and Old Hollywood books. Most of these books I purchased at Book Face at Pacific Fair, but I also found a a few books from QBD. Here are the books that I bought! Audrey The 50s  by David Wills This book was in my pinup wishlist/gift guide post last week. I was very excited when I found this book at Book Face! There are lots of beautiful photos of Audrey from this era, and I like how the book is separated into different sections of the films that she starred in during the 1950s. My favourite part of this book is definitely the Sabrina section, as I love anything to do with Audrey and William Holden.  Marilyn Monroe Metamorphosis  by David Wills Another David Wills find! This book was on sale at QBD marked down from $65 to $20 and it was a great purchase! There are some similarities between this book and Audrey The 50s, such as the different sections and the hig

Film of the Week

My choice for Film of the Week this week stars one of my favourite actresses/hair inspiration, Esther Williams. All of Esther William's films that have her in a pool are always amazing and I really enjoy her teamed up with Red Skelton. Neptune's Daughter (1949) This movie is about two sisters, played by Esther Williams and Betty Garret, who get caught in a case of mistaken identity when Red Skelton's character, Jack Sprat, tells Betty that he is captain of the South American polo team, Jose O'Rourke. He does this because he hits his head and when Betty comes in she asks him who he is and he incorrectly tells her he is Jose.  Esther then meets the real Jose O'Rourke and believing that he is a ladies man with less-than-honorable intentions, tries to convince Jose to leave her sister alone. This Jose being the real Jose has never met Betty and pretends that he will leave her alone only if he gets to date Esther instead. The story then unfolds in a nu

Birthday Wishlist/Pinup Gift Guide!

Today's blog post is a little self-indulgent as it is a wishlist of things that I would love for my birthday, which is next weekend! But I thought that it would also be a good guide for people who have friends/family that love all things pinup/retro. I've tried to find a range of fashion, beauty and entertainment gifts! 1. Dita von Teese Erotique Gift Set I already have Dita's other perfume, Rouge and I was really excited to see that this perfume was available again on her website. I love that it also comes with a shower gel! Dita's perfumes are lovely and smell amazing. In her book 'Your Beauty Mark' she talks about her love of perfume and how much work she puts into creating these scents, so you can tell that this product is created with love! This gift would be perfect for a closer friend or girlfriend. Price range $$ 2. Audrey: the 50s  This book is written by David Wills and displays beautiful pictures of Audrey and her films
